Sunday Streets

A Good Idea

Description

Sunday Streets is a program sponsored by the City of San Francisco that closes off large sections of the city’s streets to create safe, fun outdoor spaces for pedestrians, bicyclists, and group activities. The events are free to all and are largely supported by volunteers. Sunday Streets is typically held on Sunday mornings to minimize the impact on city traffic, and specific dates are selected that do not interfere with other events such as sports games.

The idea for Sunday Streets came from Bogota, Columbia, which held Ciclovia, a day to promote free health and community-related events.

Goal / Mission

The goal of Sunday Streets is to provide safe, fun outdoor spaces in different neighborhoods across the city that encourage physical activity.

Results / Accomplishments

Sunday Streets encourages physical activity by providing free, fun, and outdoor spaces. In 2010 the program served more than 20,000 residents. In 2011, monthly events will occur from April through October, and will include free activities such as bike rentals, bike safety courses, bike maintenance programs, skate rentals, and YMCA activities for children and families.
